It’s really easy to spin up a new VM to do an experiment, prove business value, or deploy an application. Suddenly it’s running in the cloud; congratulations all around on an on-time launch. And we quickly move to the next task.
After the software has been in place for a while, it’s time to level-up our deployment and optimize for durability and cost savings. This will help the product be successful in the long-term.
When we quickly provisioned it, we used on-demand instances. These are great for quick startup, but they’re more expensive compared to reserved instances where we commit to use the cloud resources for an extended period of time.
Shoreline automation looks across the AWS resources and identifies on-demand VMs. Have they been running for a long time? Shoreline resolves the resource owner, and sends an email alerting them to the potential cost savings by converting to reserved instances. If the user clicks the link in the email, the Shoreline runbook can quickly convert the EC2 instance to a reserved instance, potentially saving up to 72% on hosting costs. Shoreline makes it trivial to discover and resolve the problem.
